Buddha’s Hand (Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis) is a striking and fragrant citrus fruit known for its unusual shape, which resembles multiple yellow fingers extending from a central base. Native to northeastern India and China, it is one of the oldest citrus varieties and holds cultural and religious significance, especially in Buddhism, where it symbolizes happiness, longevity, and good fortune.

Unlike most citrus fruits, Buddha’s Hand contains little to no juice or pulp. Instead, it’s prized for its intensely aromatic rind and pith, which are entirely edible and free of bitterness. The zest is often used to flavor desserts, liqueurs, savory dishes, and perfumes. In traditional Chinese medicine, it has been used to treat pain, digestive issues, and respiratory problems.

The fruit is also popular as a natural air freshener or ornamental offering in homes and temples. Its unique appearance and fragrance make it a favorite among chefs, herbalists, and citrus collectors alike.
